Banks and Government need to beware consumers' anger

While 59% of the PRCA PR Leaders' panel do not believe that the UK has talked itself into recession, a majority place the blame for the current UK economic uncertainty at the doors of the banks with 65% believing them to be very responsible, and a further 32% believing they have contributed to the situation. The level of responsibility placed at the doors of the Government and the media was less, with around a third of respondent believing them to be very responsible.

Francis Ingham, PRCA director general said "Only three per cent of PR Leaders absolve the banks of responsibility for the position we're in -that says it all. The finance sector is going to have to manage its reputation very carefully over the coming months.  Government using tax payers' money to ease liquidity while consumers see their mortgage rates and credit card costs rise, could create anger towards the banks and the Government alike."
