PRCA & Meltwater Group force NLA climbdown

London, 7 January 2010 - The NLA today announced that it is suspending invoicing for the new web licences for end users that it brought into effect as of 1 January 2010. The NLA's decision follows Meltwater Group's decision to challenge the proposed licences in the Copyright Tribunal.

The PRCA has campaigned against the proposed licences since the NLA announced them midway through 2009 arguing that that the NLA did not have the right to copyright hyperlinks and arguing that this was essentially an illegal tax.

Francis Ingham, PRCA director general welcomed the news “This is a clear admission by the NLA that they are uncertain their proposed new licence is legal.

“Meltwater's intervention has transformed the landscape. The NLA's house of cards appears to be falling down and nobody will mourn its demise.”

NB - Should the Copyright Tribunal rule in favour of the NLA then payments will be backdated.
