Copyright tribunal rejects NLA challenge

London, 15 March 2010 - The Copyright Tribunal last month heard an application by the NLA, challenging the right for Meltwater and the PRCA to oppose the NLA digital licence before the Copyright Tribunal . The Copyright Tribunal ruled in favour of the PRCA and Meltwater, and ordered the NLA to pay our costs. The Tribunal also fixed a timeframe for the trial. There will be another procedural hearing in June 2010 before the trial begins in February 2011. The UKMAA is also now involved in the process, however no other professional bodies have intervened.

Richard Ellis, PRCA communications director welcomed the Tribunal's decision: “We are delighted by this initial ruling and look forward to hearing the Tribunal's detailed reasoning. It is over a year until the trial begins in earnest and in the meantime we will continue to lobby both the Government and the opposition to highlight our objections to the NLA's proposal.”
