Meet the PRCA Northern Ireland Committee - Sarah Hamilton

Sarah Hamilton

Tell us a little about your current role and career?

I’ve been working in PR and communications for over 12 years. I have local, national and international experience across consumer and corporate sectors, plus internal and stakeholder communications, CSR and event management. I’m currently Head of Communications and Marketing at RSPB NI, where I lead a team of four with a focus on raising RSPB’s profile in Northern Ireland. I also contribute to UK-wide initiatives as RSPB seeks to mitigate the nature and climate emergency. Previously, I lead communications for TBL International and its brands Titanic Belfast, SS Nomadic and TEC Belfast (including GAME OF THRONES: The Touring Exhibition). Prior to that I learnt my craft at a fast-paced and growing agency, with a diverse client base.

Is there any aspect of the your job you particularly enjoy? And any aspect you don't enjoy?

I love bringing big ideas to life. From concept and development, to execution and seeing (and importantly measuring) the results. I don’t think I will ever tire of the buzz following a successful campaign or event.

What career advice would you give to your younger self?

I started working in the industry when I was still at school and continued with several jobs throughout university. This experience proved invaluable. I was given three pieces of advice which have served me well: - Work hard and get as much experience as possible - Be a ‘yes’ person and seize the opportunity - Trust your instincts.

Why did you decide to join the PRCA NI Committee?

For me, it’s great to be working with like-minded colleagues to raise the profile of PR and communications in Northern Ireland, as well as provide guidance, share ideas and address challenges for the industry. I can also work to inform, recruit and inspire the next generation of practitioners.

Will you take away any positives from the past 12 months?

Whether it’s personal discoveries about ourselves and what we want from life or new insights about our jobs or daily lives – lots of us have positive lessons we have learned from 2020. For me, I’ve appreciated the simple things, good health, the sense of community and my friends and family. Professionally, work has been really important for me throughout and although challenging, I’ve really enjoyed it. There is no doubt that the vital and diverse role communications plays for businesses has really shone through during this difficult time.
