The PRCA National Awards Showcase

If you work in PR and comms you’ll know that our industry is full of awards! Almost all work by agencies, in-house teams, and freelance individuals can be nominated and entered into an industry awards scheme of some nature. But, why is it that you choose to enter these schemes, and why would you choose to enter the PRCA National Awards over anything else?

Having looked at awards before ‘awards’ became a thing; the reason for them may be for distinguished, innovative contribution to any area, having a major local role in any activity, or recognising an outstanding achievement. Well, that’s what the Queen recognises when she hands out a CBE, OBE, or MBE. When we evaluate the PRCA National Awards, we’re not far off the same theme: recognising the best in the industry, celebrating outstanding work, and shining light on those campaigns, teams, or individuals that are having a major role in moving the industry forward.

On Wednesday, 12th June, 2019, we held the very first PRCA National Awards Showcase. The event explored 3 key themes:

1.       Why enter the PRCA National Awards?

2.       Tips and tricks to writing a winning entry

3.       What could you gain if you enter the awards? Or win the awards?

A panel discussion took place with current and past judges including Chris Blackwood MPRCA, Managing Director, Third City; Rachel Bell MPRCA, Founder, Shine; James Gordon-MacIntosh MPRCA, Co-founder & Managing Partner, Hope&Glory PR; and Jo Patterson MPRCA, Co-Managing Director, Porter Novelli. Each gave insights into what they look for as a judge. Each shared tips along the lines of: be clear and concise, be prepared to write your entry and then cut it in half, have careful consideration as to what category you choose to enter, don’t neglect the headline - come up with something snappy, and try not to underestimate the power of a good image.

The PRCA showcased the main reasons to enter being:

·         Promote the industry – We’re a not-for-profit, so all the profits from our awards are invested back into our industry to help teams and individuals maximise the value they deliver to clients and organisations

·         Encourage your team – Shine the limelight on your team’s fantastic work and reward every member of your team that contributed

·         Make your mark – Display and celebrate your success over the last year and be recognised by the world’s largest PR association

·         Expand your network – Win new business and open opportunities for new clientele by rubbing shoulders with award-winning businesses

·         Gain global recognition – Be globally recognised by the PR industry, with our judging process consisting of industry-leaders from across the world.

A selection of 2018 winner case studies were displayed across the event from the likes of Kindred, Virgin Trains, Unicef UK, Third City, Hope&Glory, Taylor Herring, and MHRA. This gave guests an insight as to what the campaign was, what the judges commented, and what they have gained since.

All in all the night was able to distinguish the PRCA National Awards from the busy schedule of other industry ceremonies. If you would like to find out more about the evening, or about the awards themselves, please contact: anna.green@prca.org.uk
