Event Overview

The PRCA Education Group is delighted to welcome CEO of Ark, Lucy Heller, to discuss the future of academies on Monday 25th November at 6:30 p.m.  Kindly hosted by PRCA member, Connect.

The majority of secondary schools in England, and 25% of primaries, are now academies.  Under both the Blair and Cameron Governments, these were championed as the future of education, with the ambition for all schools to convert to academy status being championed by successive Prime Ministers and Education Secretaries, but they have recently become a more polarising political issue, with current Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, pledging his support to ‘scale up’ the successes of academies, whilst Shadow Education Secretary, Angela Rayner, suggesting Labour would immediately halt their expansion if they were to form a future Government.

One of the UK’s largest academy chains, Ark, has prided itself on working in communities where education can ‘make the biggest difference to children’s lives’ and the charity has now grown to a network of 37 schools across the UK.  Ark places innovation at the forefront of its work, founding Now Teach – an organisation which aims to get late-career city professionals into teaching; and Mathematics Mastery – aimed at replicating successful East Asian education models of mathematics teaching.

Described as ‘single-minded, charismatic and highly energetic’, Ark’s CEO, Lucy Heller, has taken the education sector by storm since her move from fund management, pushing her team to reach ‘mountains beyond mountains’ and countering the male dominance of Academy leaders.  Lucy will speak to members about her experiences before taking questions.

This event is worth 15 points in the PRCA CPD Programme.
