Look after yourself this December

December. Campaigns are ramping up, planning for 2023 is in full swing and let’s not forget the countless drinks receptions, dinners, and all-round festive cheer that this month brings. It’s certainly a busy few weeks before everyone goes home for the holidays and switches off for a week, enjoying some well-earned rest.

It’s easy enough to get totally festive frazzled and looking after yourself needs to be a priority at this time of year. Away from the daily office ongoings, there’ll be lots of entertaining, late nights and schmoozing. I love a good party as much as the next person, but I recognise in myself an element of being an ‘extroverted introvert’. I reach a point where I need to step away from the busy environment of holiday events and recharge because, if I don’t, I’ll begin to feel overwhelmed.

I’m sure I’m not alone in this feeling. I’ve worked out how I can look after myself during busy periods to ensure my mental health remains stable.

Don’t be afraid to say no

It might feel like there’s a lot of expectation to attend all the events this December. While some may be compulsory, others will be voluntary. If your social battery is nearing empty, then it’s okay to say no and take the evening for yourself. There’ll be plenty of other events throughout 2023 so try not to burn yourself out in the holiday rush.

Have self-care activities pre-planned

Whether you’re coming home after an event or decide to skip one altogether to look after yourself, make sure you’ve got something lovely planned for yourself. My go to is a cosy drink, ideally a hot chocolate or cup of tea when it’s cold outside, and something easy to watch on the TV.

Ask a friend to go with you

Standing in a room full of strangers at any time of the year can be dauntingThis holiday season, if you find yourself invited to an event that you really want to attend but feel a little anxious about going to alone, take someone along with you. That gesture of moral support from someone you trust can be the confidence boost needed to feel more at ease.

Prioritise good sleep

It sounds incredibly obvious but having a good sleep routine – especially during a busy month – is integral. If you know that you need a good eight hours to wake up feeling rested and refreshed, then there’s no harm in ducking out of the party early and heading home.

Talk to someone about how you’re feeling

If the holiday season is getting a bit much, whether in a professional or personal capacity, find someone who you feel comfortable talking to about it. That could be a colleague, a friend, a family member or an impartial third party, like Mind or the Samaritans. As I always say, a problem shared is a problem halved and can help to alleviate any pressure that might be weighing heavily on your shoulders.

This year has been a busy one for PR professionals and the festive season is going to be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all the amazing things we’ve achieved in 2022. However you celebrate, I hope you look after yourself and have a wonderful time. See you in 2023!
