Event Overview

We are delighted to have Mark Farmer, the CEO of real estate and construction consultancy CAST, and author of the much discussed Farmer Review, addressing us in January.

Mark’s Review of the UK Construction Labour Model,  commissioned by two Government departments, has suggested that Britain’s construction industry faces “inexorable decline” unless radical steps are taken to address its longstanding problems. Communications and delivering a fundamentally new industry reputation is critical to enacting that ‘radical change’.

The Review highlights the industry’s dysfunctional training model, its lack of innovation and collaboration as well as its non-existent research and development (R&D) culture. Low productivity continues to hamper the sector, while recent high levels of cost inflation, driven by a shortage of workers, has stalled numerous housing schemes as they have become too expensive to build.

Of its 10 recommendations, Farmer urges the Government to use its education, fiscal, housing and planning policy measures to initiate change and create the right conditions to support the sector’s modernisation. He also encourages more investment in pre-manufactured construction, through offsite built or modular housing.

We look forward to seeing you and this not to be missed evening session.
