Event Overview

The steady trend of journalists making the transition to PR is becoming commonplace, with many joining PR agencies or taking corporate communications posts.

Today, with the demands of the 24/7 news agenda and increased scrutiny on companies – particularly those operating within high profile areas such as the healthcare sector - many organisations are turning to experienced journalists to provide strategic media counsel and create compelling, ready-to-use content to help protect their reputation.

For PR, the ability to think like a reporter and to understand how the media works is an essential part of the job. However, is a keen news sense enough to make a successful career in PR?

This session aims to explore the experiences of journalists who have made the move from journalism to PR or communications posts to learn what their initial impressions were of PR, the challenges they faced, what skills they found useful in making the change and advice they would give their past selves before making the move from hack to flack.

Speakers:

  • Adam Brimelow - Head of News at NHS Providers, and former health correspondent at BBC News
  • Rebecca Smith – Head of Media at NICE, and former medical editor at Daily Telegraph
  • Martin Barrow, Media advisor, and former journalist at The Times

This event is worth 15 points in the PRCA CPD scheme.
