Apprentice Fact File - Davina Masemo

Hi, I’m Davina and for the past 18 months I’ve been working in WF Comms while completing a Level 4 Public Relations and Communications apprenticeship with the PRCA.

Highlights from your time on the programme

I’ve really enjoyed getting stuck into the world of work straight after university and getting hands on experience of delivering high-profile campaigns and communications and working with such an amazing team! I found the experience of both studying and working seamless as I’ve been able to apply my knowledge from practical experiences to my coursework, which in turn has also benefited the skills I bring to the workplace. Through the PRCA I’ve been able to access training, workshops and webinars which have been really insightful in giving me an in-depth knowledge of PR and comms. I felt supported and informed throughout the process and was also lucky enough to work with a great coach.

How has the experience benefited you?

I feel really fortunate to have been chosen for this role. It’s been my first proper job and an invaluable experience. I’ve been able to work with not only an amazing comms team but various stakeholders throughout the Council, and gain insight into the vast and ever-changing world of local government. Through this apprenticeship I’ve grown not only in skills but in confidence. I’ve built a strong foundation for the rest of my career, made incredible connections, and discovered a passion for public service and working within communities.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

100%. I think a misconception about apprenticeships is that you have to choose between doing one or going to university – but you can do both! Apprenticeships are a great option whether you’re fresh out of school/college or out of university, as they give you a strong foundation into the world of work which you may not have had before, while challenging you intellectually also. It’s also a great way to retrain or upskill if you’ve already established a career but want the flexibility to try other avenues or take on different responsibilities. I think regardless of what stage you’re at in your career, there’s an apprenticeship for everyone!
