Apprenticeship insights at FTI Consulting #NAW2024

National Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate and recognise the valuable contributions that an apprenticeship provides. In light of this, we conducted a Q&A with FTI Consulting’s apprentices who are nearing the end of their programme to get their thoughts and tips for those interested in a career in Public Relations. Each apprentice works in a different sector within FTI, which means they have unique experiences with each other.

Abbie Carlton, Apprentice, Digital & Insights - Strategic Communications

1. Why was an apprenticeship the best route for you?

"After completing my A levels, I was determined to find an apprenticeship that aligned with my interest in social media as a career option and I wanted to learn more about digital brand management. But, not being academically-minded, a three-year Uni course to qualify for graduate entry routes to the sector wasn’t what I wanted. I felt I would learn and grow much faster by getting straight into a hands-on role. An apprenticeship seemed to be a natural next step."

2. What are your plans after the apprenticeship?

"After my apprenticeship, I’m excited to become a consultant in FTI Strategic Communications’ Digital & Insights Practice – to further boost my knowledge and develop my skills, whilst working with an amazing team!"

Evie Scott, Apprentice, Financials - Strategic Communications

3. What have you experienced as an apprentice?

"It has been extremely rewarding to see myself grow over the past year and a half and I appreciate the support around me from FTI Consulting and the PRCA. During my apprenticeship, I have been able to be involved in numerous training sessions both with the PRCA and FTI Consulting which has helped me expand my industry knowledge. Having the opportunity to support on client projects and lead on my own tasks has provided me with valuable practical experience that aligns to the industry. Additionally, I have been able to network internally and externally across the business, as well as develop key communication skills that are needed for a successful career in public relations."

4. What are your plans after the apprenticeship?

"Now that I am coming to the end of my apprenticeship, I would love to fulfil a role in communications as I have really grown and developed in the sector. In the future, I hope that I can use my own knowledge and skills to mentor individuals starting a career in communications."

Claudia De MichielApprentice, International Campaigns & Issues Management – Strategic Communications

5. What advice would you give to this considering an apprenticeship?

"The advice I’d give to someone thinking about starting an apprenticeship is to go for it! Never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and take every opportunity that comes your way. You are surrounded by so many experts that are there to help you progress your career and character, both personally and professionally - so be vocal about what you enjoy, where you want to improve and what direction you want your career to take. Celebrate your achievements and progress, and take advantage of your network. I have loved every minute and I look forward to seeing what the rest of my career has in store!"

6. What are your plans after the apprenticeship?

"My plans after my apprenticeship are to begin my full-time career in PR, progress further in the reputation management side of PR and comms within the International Campaigns and Issues Management team at FTI and to develop my professional network."
